Happy New Year!

May 2012 bring peace and prosperity for everyone, Laura and Earl Nesbitt.

Almost New Year's Day!

Right before the big storms a few weeks ago, Earl visited one of the premier lumber mills in the country searching for just the right boards for a client. In this photo on the right is a stickered log on the bottom of the pile. On the left are some stickered slabs. On the top is concrete!

What a Great Show! Of course we're going back next year! Sold the Dimidiated Orbicular Desk, the Split Chair, and several vessels, and met with several new clients about custom projects. Terrific!

These past few weeks, it's been great to watch Earl at his workbench in his shop designing new pieces to sell at the shows in Chicago and NYC. He's done one mock-up of a jewelry box that's really beautiful. It's a reversible design that can be built so that either the bottom or the top can be opened. He's also got designs on paper for several other pieces.

Here's a photo of the latest from the shop. It's a solid mesquite slab and legs for the base of a glass top dining table. The client lives in Texas, and it's being shipped later today.

Great story just posted on CustomMade about Earl building the three new cabinets mentioned below — click here to read a pdf of the story or click here to read the story on CustomMade!

Right now I'm building two pieces — a mesquite dining table base for clients of an interior designer, and a mesquite dining table for the Western Design Conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The "rescued" pieces of mesquite are beautiful slabs! They should make great pieces of furniture. An image of the raw boards for the dining table is pasted below. I'll update soon with images of the final pieces.

Just got back in the shop after finishing the installation of three of my most ambitious pieces to date, definitely testing my creative problem solving ability. The entertainment center was the most difficult of the three (click photo below on left), made from birdseye maple, wenge, bubinga and lacewood. I milled and then glued together multiple pieces of bubinga and lacewood strips to less than 1/16" thick to construct the doors. The result is four doors and two end panels made from nearly 300 strips of wood pressed to form the curves in the design. The two center pocket doors retract, and the two outer doors pivot outward.

The corner cabinets (photo on far right) have a sculpted zebrawood centerpiece, highly-figured quilted maple top and walnut frame. There is also a solid zebrawood panel insert that can be removed. China cabinet (middle photo) is made from highly-figured quilted maple, walnut, and spalted maple. The upper and lower doors, and drawers all have hand-shaped zebrawood pulls. The upper doors have a water glass insert. These last two cabinets finish a dining set that began several years ago when I designed and built a dining table with 10 chairs for the same clients.

Good news! I've been invited to exhibit at the Architectural Digest Home Design Show March 22-25, 2012 in NYC! In the photos below on the right I am working on a final design layout for an entertainment center, and on the left I am in my booth at the American Craft Council Show in Baltimore in February, 2011.

The ACC Show went really well. Met a lot of interested customers, and sold some pieces. Below are photos of the two pieces I built specifically for the show. Click the images to look at photos of me building the pieces.
